Thane Creek Area Declared as Flamingo Sanctuary
- The Maharashtra government has declared the Northern part of Thane Creek as a wildlife sanctuary.
- It attracts thousands of flamingos every year. A notification for this, under Section-18 of the Wildlife Protection A’ct, 1972, was issued by the revenue and forest department on.August 6, 2015.
- The sanctuary has been named as Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. It spread over an area of 1690 hectares, which includes 896 hectares of mangroves and 794 hectares of land adjacent to a water body. It will be Maharashtra’s second-marine sanctuary, after Malvan.
- The Mumbai Mangrove Conservation Unit, under the State mangrove cell, will be responsible for the management of this sanctuary.
- The protected area will mainly include the mangrove forests and wetlands of Mulund,Vikhroli, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg and Mandale.
Australian Court Revoked Environmental Nod
- Australia’s Federal court overturned the government environmental approval on August 5, 2015 for Adani Group’s $ 16 billion Carmichael coal mine and Rail Project. The under construction mine has been facing opposition from environmentalists, who claimed it to be a threat to the Great Barrier Reef.
- The company project is in the fifth year of development and approvals. Adani took over the Carmichael coal project in 2010 with plans to develop a coal mine, a connecting rail link and the Abbot Point port to transport the coal to India.
- The proposed mine expected produce 60 million tonnes of coal a year with total extract of 4 billion tonnes. The operating life of the mine is estimated to 90 years and will be the largest in Australia. The major extract from this mine is planned to be exported to India.

UN Members Reached Agreement on New Development Agenda
- The 193 member States of the United Nations (UN) have reached agreement on a new development agenda for the next 15 years for eradicating poverty and hunger, achieving gender equality, improving living standards and taking urgent action to combat climate change. These goals will succeed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which was adopted in 2000.
- The draft agreement document called Transforming our World : The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was built on the success of the MDGs. On August 2, 2015 it outlines 17 goals with 169 specific targets on issues ranging from quality education to affordable and reliable energy.
- The agreement has broader sustainability agenda dealing with ‘five Ps’ people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. It will be formally adopted by UN member states at coming Sustainable Development Summit to be held at the UN , headquarters in New York from September 25 to 27, 2015.

WHO Declared India Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Free
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that mothers and newborns are free from tetanus at the time of birth in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced it on August 27, 2015 at the inauguration the Call to.Action Summit 2015.
- Call to Action Summit 2015 is an initiative to reduce child and maternal deaths across the world and which will help the developing countries to tackle health challenges related to women and child. India’s IMR stands at 40 while the MMR stands at 167.
- According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are 24 countries that make up for 36% of the global population and account for 70% of child and maternal deaths. Mali has the highest Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) at 78, while South Sudan has the highest Mother Mortality Rate (MMR) at 730.
