33% Quota for Women in Government Jobs in Madhya Pradesh

  • The Madhya Pradesh government decided to provide 33% reservation to women in government jobs on October 28, 2015. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting presided over by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
  • With this decision, the reservation to women in government jobs in the state has been increased from present 30% to 33%.
  • The State Cabinet also gave its approval to a proposal providing compensation to farmers i.e , they have to repay only Rs 90000 on a loan of Rs l lakh.
  • The State Cabinet also decided to give monthly pension of Rs 2500 to the relatives of those who were killed in anti-Sikh riots of 1984 in the State.

8th Edition of National Seed Congress Held in Hyderabad

  • The Eighth edition of National Seed Congress (NSC) held in Hyderabad on October 27, 2015. The three-day ‘National Seed Congress’ was inagurated by Telangana Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and organised by Union Agriculture Ministry.
  • About 600 participants from agricultural universities, government agencies and the farm sector were attending the congress. About 80 progressive farmers involved in the seed development are also took part in the congress.
  • The aim of the Congress was to provide common platform to ril stakeholders for discussing a variety of issues including advances in seed development technologies and various seed polit ies vvith respect to the seed industry.

Foundation Stone for Amaravati Laid Down by Prime Minister

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Andhra Pradesh’s capital city Amaravati on October 22, 2015 at a village in Guntur district on the occasion of Dussehra and Vijaya Dashmi Singapore government agencies have prepared the master plans for the three-layered capital i.e., seed capital, capital city and capital region.
  • While, the Centre would provide funds for construction of legislature buildings as per the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, the State government has plans to set-up hubs of sports, entertainment and in other fields to promote economic activity.
  • The capital city Amaravati, a place of immense historical, mythological and cultural significance is
    , situated near about 40 km from Vijayawada, the commercial capital of Andhra Pradesh. Amaravati, situated in Guntur district, was once the scat of power of Satavahana rulers.

First Car-free Day Observed in Delhi

  • Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia participated in a cycle rally from RecUFort to Bhagwan Das Marg on October 22, 2015 to mark Delhi’s first car-free day to encourage the people to use public transport instead of using their cars.
  • It was observed from 7 am till 12 noon on the stretch connecting Red Fort to India Gate via Delhi Gate and ITO. Delhi Transport Communication (DTC) also had deployed additional buses with frequency of one or two minutes on this route for better facilitation of commuters.
  • Delhi government has also decided to observe ‘Car-Free Day’ on different road stretches on the 22nd of every month. This initiative seeks to reduce pollution and traffic congestion in Delhi by encouraging residents to use public transport.

Maharashtra Government Decided to Impose MCOCA Law

  • The Maharashtra government has decided to use stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) law against the hoarders and black marketers on October 20, 2015 after the state machinery has started large-scale raids on suspected hording of pulses.
  • As per the directives issued by the Union government, stock limits on pulses, edible oil seeds and edible oil have been imposed to meet the demand of essential commodities.
  • MCOCA was enacted in 1999 by Maharashtra State to combat organised crime and terrorism in the State and to remove drawbacks of Legal framework which were inadequate to. curb or control the menace of organised crime.

Maharashtra Declared Drought-tike Condition

  • The Maharashtra government declared on October 16, 2015 a ‘drought-like condition’ in 14708 of the 43000 villages which received less than 50% average rainfall between June and July, 2015.
  • The Marathwada region has been most affected, with a drought-like condition declared in as many as 8522’villages in the region. The Nasik and Jalgaon districts of North Maharashtra have also been severely affected.
  • In this regard, a series of measures for drought- affected farmers announced by government of Maharashtra including the waiver of land revenue and school fees for their children and a 33% waiver in the bill amount of agricultural pumps.

5% Quota for Gujjars and Other SBCs in Rajasthan

  • The Rajasthan Special Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointments and Rosts in Services under the State) Act, 2015 came into being on October 16, 2015 with the State government notifying it.
  • The bill would provide 5% reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the Gujjar, Banjara,
    Rabari, and Gadia Lohar communities in Rajasthan. Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh gave an accent to the 14% reservation to EBCs along with the 5% reservation for SBCs, but the State government is yet to notify the 14% reservation for EBCs.
  • The Rajasthan Assembly had passed two separate Bills in September, 2015 for providing 5% reservation to SBCs and 14% reservation to Economically Backward Classes (EBC) of unreserved categories.

Haryana Government gave its Nod to ‘Swadhar Greh’ Scheme for Women

  • Assuring economic and social security to women, the Haryana government has approved ‘Swadhar Greh’ scheme on October 18, 2015. The scheme is launched with an aim to create a supportive institutional framework catering to women’s primary needs in difficult circumstances.
  • The scheme envisages that shelter, food, clotliing and health as well as economic and social security are assured for such women and special needs of these women are properly taken care of and under no circumstances they be left unattended or abandoned which could lead to their exploitation and desolation.
  • Under the scheme, ‘Swadhar Greh’ would be set-up in every district with capacity to house 30 women to cater to the needs of shelter, food, clothing, medical treatment and. care of the women in distress and who are without any social and economic support.

Tamil Nadu Government Banned ‘Ketoprofen’ to Save Vultures

  • The government of Tamil Nadu has withdrawn Ketoprofen, a Non-Steroid Anti – Inflammatory Drug (NSAI-D) used extensively for veterinary purposes on October 13, 2015 to save the vulture population in the three Western districts.
  • The Directorate of Animal Husbandry has decided to discontinue the use of Ketoprofen in Erode, Coimbatore and The Nil gins, where the vulture population was in danger. The drug was included in the procurement list of the Animal Husbandry Department in 2014-15. The State government had included Ketoprofen based on an effort to identify an alternative to the banned drug Diclofenac.

Kerala Government Launched ‘Operation Valsalya’

  • The Kerala government has launched a programme titled as ‘Operation Valsalya’ on October 9, 2015 to trace, rescue and reunite the little ones with their family. This ambitious programme is envisaged to be implemented on the lines of the much acclaimed ‘Operation Smile’ project in Ghaziabad (UP).
  • According to police statistics, as many as 69 children have been kidnapped or abducted across the state till June, 2015. While,116 children had been kidnapped in the State in 2014, the number was 136 in 2013 and 147 in 2012.
  • The State Social Justice Department, which initiated the programme on a small scale recently, iv planning to execute it with the support of various government department.

Rajasthan Unveiled Start-up Policy

  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje released the State’s first start-up policy on October 9, 2015 to galvanise the start-up ecosystem in the State and promote entrepreneurship in a two-day Rajasthan Startup Fest 2015 in Jaipur’s Sitapura area.
  • The start-up policy aimed at strengthening start-up eco-systcm in the state by setting-up 50 incubators/ accelerators, supporting 500 start-ups creating 100000 sq ft of incubation, and mobilising Rs 500 crore angcl/venture capital funding in the next five years. Start-ups will be also provided with marketing assistance of Rs 10 lakh at launch stage.

West Bengal to get India’s First Dolphin Reserve

  • India’s first community reserve to protect the endangered Gangetic river dolphins, declared as the National Aquatic Animal in 2010, will come up in West Bengal. Decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the State Wildlife Board chaired by State Chief Wildlife Warden Azam Zaidi on October 9, 2015.
  • It would be set-tip In the Hooghly rivet between Malda and Sundarbans av per provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and the methodology to develop the community reserve is being chalked out by a separate committee The Ganges River dolphin, called as Susu, inhabits the Ganges Brahmaputra- Meghna and Kamaphulisaugu river systems of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.
